Beware. Rats and alarms don’t mix.

We found a rat in our staff kitchen the other day…

In a trap.

The best place for rats in my opinion. I’m not a huge fan.

But the rat in the trap reminded me it’s that time of the year again. When rodents start heading indoors in search of some warmth and a nice place for their nests.

And that means trouble for your security system if you don’t watch out.

Rats and mice can cause damage by chewing through wires or building their nests in the wrong place. And this can result in false alarms or malfunctions.

But don’t panic. There are two easy fixes to alarm system rat problems.

First up, have your security system serviced if you haven’t done so within the last year or so (alarms, CCTV, access control, automatic gates, driveway beams etc.). This will check for any damage and potential issues.

Second, keep the rats and mice out. Carry out regular checks for any signs of rodents and set and monitor traps. Predator Free NZ is a great resource if you’re looking for some tips and tricks.

Funnily enough, I just read an article yesterday. It seems the rats in Wellington prefer the fancy gourmet peanut butter. I’m not sure whether our Tauranga rats are the same, but I’m not taking any chances
