Security tips for your home these holidays

Its beginning to feel a lot like Christmas…

And for a lot of people that means holiday time. Unless you’re a burglar, of course. Then it means it’s time to get busy.

Here are our top security tips for your home these holidays.

Don’t let burglars know what you got for Xmas

Christmas trees stacked with presents are a magnet for opportunist thieves. So please don’t display your Christmas tree all lit up in your front window. And when the big day is done and dusted, packaging from your TV or PlayStation and other expensive items is a magnet for burglars. It lets them know what they’ll find inside your house. Don’t leave it sticking out of the recycling.

Hide valuables out of site

Place any expensive valuables, such as electronics, where they can’t be seen from outside. Generally, burglars only spend an average of three to five minutes in a house taking what they can see and find easily. Hide any jewellery, car keys, and valuables out of site and in non-obvious places (ie: not the top drawer in the master bedroom!).

Make your security visible

Place security cameras in plain sight, make sure your alarm is easily visible. Put up security signage, inform intruders that you have a security monitoring system in place. Warn them off!

Light it up

It’s a good idea to install sensor lights on access paths or around main doors. Also, trim trees or remove shrubbery which might ‘hide’ a burglar’s activity on your property.

Enlist trusted neighbours

Tell neighbours you know and trust about your holiday plans. Ask them to keep an eye on things while you’re away.

Check all windows and doors are secure

Seems obvious. But entering through an open door or window accounts for around 25 % of burglaries. So remember to shut and lock all doors and windows! And what about those wobbly latches or flimsy locks? Sort those out before you go. Also, don’t leave a door key hidden outside – burglars know all the places to look.

Don’t leave anything lying around that could help a burglar

There’s nothing handier than a ladder when it comes to reaching high windows. Or a heavy object to throw through a window. Have a look around outside and put away anything that could help someone break in.

Arm your alarm

Again, obvious but you’d be amazed how many people forget in their rush to get out the door! If it’s not on, your alarm won’t help much.
